Abstract: Newton’s three laws of physics
are used as a metaphor for the elements of resistance to organizational
change. The author uses the example of a public accounting firm to demonstrate
that resistance to change exists everywhere and that there are strategies
for overcoming people’s natural resistance to change.
- Do you enjoy changing the way you have done things for a long time?
If your manager was asking you to change the way you did one aspect
of your job, how could that manager make the change easier for you?
- From the article, who in the organization applies the “force”
to the people who are not changing? In what ways can this be done constructively?
- Describe different ways to communicate with employees during a change
process?
2. Culture Guides Company During Economic Slowdown. (Business

Abstract: The convergence of technologies into
hand-held devices has seen RIM’s blackberry now being able to support
Facebook software. RIM is encouraging the use of its products for personal,
rather than strictly business, use. No implications of this are discussed.
- Is technological convergence (all technologies in one device) a good
thing or a bad thing? How about during an employee’s “time
off” or on weekends?
- Would you be comfortable interacting with your boss on Facebook?
Do you think that there should be a separation of personal and work
communications?
- What measures could be put into place to ensure that both employees
and employers communicated in a way that reflected each other’s
needs?
